A scarcity mindset can show up as a person having too much stuff. I know that sounds like an oxymoron. How can too much stuff feel scarce?

Let me explain.

When someone feels that they don’t have enough money, they will often overcompensate by buying too much. Then, when they look around at their home, they’ll see lots of stuff. They feel rich for the moment.

The problem is that they use their cash (which can only be spent once) on more things than they need. Their money balance drops while their excess value increases to more than they need or can use. Then, they’re back to needing more money (scarcity) and useless stuff they don’t need.

It becomes a vicious cycle.

This type of spending happens in so many areas of life. Whether at the supermarket, online, retail shops, or even significant expenses such as a car or home.

Positivity studies have shown that after a big purchase (i.e., a car) that someone has dreamed of owning for a while, their happiness level only increases for an average of three days after the purchase. After that, it drops down to what it was prior. So, in other words, don’t expect your “possessions” to make you happier.

There are two essential ways to start shifting from a belief of scarcity.

1. Declutter all of the excess stuff in your life. I’ve donated, given away, and thrown out more things than I care to mention. It really “hurts” when that stuff still has tags or has expired. It’s a big reminder of “poor” decision-making, which further erodes self-esteem.

2. Shift your mindset. A scarcity mindset, when drilled down, typically is when a person doesn’t believe they are enough. So, it’s not about things; it’s how their core beliefs about themselves.

Let’s face it. We’ve all bought stuff as impulse items, hoping it would raise our spirits.

However, you can realize you are enough when you learn to raise your confidence without buying stuff.

More stuff doesn’t make you better. Who you are and how you show up in the world makes you better.

You are enough as you are.
