Do you ever get stuck trying to decide what to price your program, product or services at?
If you’re looking for that “perfect” answer – where the stars align, music plays and you instantly know…forget it. It won’t happen.
However, this is what will happen:
1) You may make a mistake
2) You can correct the mistake
3) You might get it right
4) You may want to change it
5) You might get it right, again
Years ago, I had a career in retail management. I was a regional manager, which meant I would travel all across the country to visit my company’s stores. Some of these were planned visits and some were unplanned (that’s another story). Anyways, I got really good at doing “going out of business” sales. During these sales, the goals was to move the merchandise out of the store as quickly as possible – while also making as much money as possible. It wasn’t just as simple as pricing everything really cheaply – we were also evaluated on our profitability. Needless to say, I was a champ – a hero- in my company. I’d make them wads of cash very quickly.
What I learned from one of my counterparts – and this is really important – is that you can change pricing until you find the “magic” price point. That’s the amount that everyone wants to buy it at. If it’s too expensive, people will pass it by and if it’s too cheap, it will turn people off.
It’s the same in your business. You may need to change the number a few times and that’s ok. If you find people saying “yes” really (too) quickly you may be undervaluing. On the other hand, if people are saying no really quickly, you may be priced too high or may be talking to the wrong people.
As you start getting in touch with your confidence level, the right price will be known. That comes from a place of trusting your intuition.
You may need the help of a coach to help you with pricing. Sometimes, as a coach, we will (gently) push our clients a bit into a new pricing level. That’s a good thing because it’s easy for someone to get comfortable with old, safe pricing.
One of the best things about being an entrepreneur is that you can give yourself a raise whenever and as often as you like. So, don’t worry about getting it right the first time- the important thing is that you ultimately get there.
