Think back to your younger, single days (or maybe for you that’s what you are now) and when you went to the bars.

Remember how much you hated hearing those lines?  I did.  Yikes…I felt like I need to take a shower afterwards.  It was all so sleazy and phony.  You couldn’t trust the person saying that at all.  In fact, you probably want to get as far away from that person as quickly as possible.

Now, think about the lines you hear at networking events:

“Want to sign up for my workshop?”

“Want to buy my product?”

“Want to listen to my free call? 

Did you know those are considered sleazy marketing pick up lines?   They sound just as insincere as the pickup lines you heard in the bars.  Just like you don’t like hearing them, the people you meet don’t like hearing them from you either.

Or how about the people who meet you, ask for your business card and then put you on their email list without even asking.  That’s both spam and sleazy.  (Hint:  Ask people if you can add them to your list…you’ll make more -and keep- more friends that way).

“Want some free advice?”   success

How about those “fire-hosers“?  These are the people who will coach you or give you their opinion without even being asked.  That’s equally repelling and actually kind of gross.

Next time you’re out networking, think about how you come across and what you are saying to the people you meet.

1.  Are you being sincere?

2.  Are you listening to them?

3.  Are you making a connection?

4.  Are you acting like a used-car salesperson?

Instead, try taking time to get to know them instead of trying to jump in bed with your prospective clients.  You’ll get a much better connection and much better results.  You’ll go from sleazy to sincere in no time!

How do you like to be treated when you meet people for the first time?

What’s the most important thing you want people to remember about you after that meet you?

What personality qualities do you want people to see in you when they first meet you?

Ask yourself those questions the next time you are out networking and notice the different responses you now get from the people you meet.
