Did you know that my Mom was a gourmet cook?  It’s true (and I’m really happy it was true 🙂 )

My parents were engaged six weeks after meeting, and my Mom went to a gourmet cooking school promptly after that. She took so much joy in entertaining.  From setting the table to look like something from “House Beautiful” magazine to the delicious and enticing food she served which could “out-star” any 5-star restaurant.

In her last year, she planned several parties for the community where she lived.  My Mom loved holidays and decided to host several parties to explain Chanukah and then Purim to her neighbors who were unfamiliar with these Jewish holidays.  For the Chanukah party, she made hundreds of potato “latkes” (pancakes”) and lit the menorah while telling the story of Chanukah. More recently, she and my sister had made 750 delicious cookies! Hamantaschen (triangle shaped cookie) in 3 different flavors, apple, apricot, and blueberry.  Store bought fillers were not allowed by her standards.   Each of these fillings was handmade, along with the dough.

They spent two days making these delicious cookies for her celebratory party!

My Mom was excited about both of these parties for months beforehand. She planned and talked about them with excitement for months in advance.  I know that this purpose helped extend her life.

A lot of teachers talk about finding your purpose and how to find it.

What I want to focus on in this article is why more than ever it is crucial for you to have this clarity.

Did you know that having a purpose in life lowers your risk of ‘Alzheimer’s Disease and mild cognitive impairment?

I’ll bet like me you previously thought it would give you more clarity while helping you build a more successful business.  And, that belief is true.  However, in an article from General Psychiatry (2010) where they did this critical study over a ten-year period.  They discovered that having a purpose had a very powerful brain effect.

These are the ten important questions that were asked of participants:

  1. I feel good when I think about what I have done in the past and what I hope to do in the future.
  2. I live 1 day at a time and do not think about the future.
  3. I tend to focus on the present because the future nearly always brings me problems.
  4. I have a sense of direction and purpose in life.
  5. My daily activities often seem unimportant and trivial to me.
  6. I used to set goals, but now that seems like a waste of time.
  7. I enjoy making plans for the future and working them to a reality
  8. I am an active person in carrying out the plans I set for myself
  9. Some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of them.
  10. I sometimes feel I have done all there is to do in life.

(note: some questions are looking for a “yes” and some for a “no” answer)

Start asking yourself these ten questions.  What are your answers?

If you haven’t discovered your purpose, then how do you find it?  There are all sorts of books and quizzes out there to help. You can even make lists or trust your intuition for the answer. However, I firmly believe that your purpose is tied up with your brilliance. I’ve seen this over and over again with myself and with my clients.

By the term “brilliance,” I am referring to when you feel in flow.  Everything becomes more natural to you and makes sense. You’ll say something, and it was so amazing that you wished someone had recorded it to save. It’s what lights you up.  You could do this morning, noon and night – even if you didn’t get paid for it.  (BUT, I want you to get paid for it).

Check in with yourself and uncover what your brilliance is and find the cross section of where your purpose is.  A warning – your brilliance isn’t necessarily what you are “good” at.  People often mistake the two and end up creating lives that don’t make them happy.

Sometimes, what we are brilliant at is right in front of our eyes, but we don’t see it.  If you want help figuring it out, contact my team to set up a call with me.
