Did you ever see Cary Grant’s last movie “Walk, Don’t Run” ? I happened to see it on television years ago. The reason I watched it was because my Great-Uncle, Sol Saks, actually wrote the screenplay and was there for the filming of the movie in Japan. Remind me to tell you the story sometime of why my Uncle’s assistant complained about having to have breakfast with Cary Grant. It’s a cute story!
You know I’m all about fast results. I believe if you can get there faster, why wait? But, it’s also important to realize that your “journey is a marathon, not a sprint“. I learned that expression when I worked in the Corporate World and it has stuck with me ever since.
A priority in having a successful business is being able to balance your work and life. It’s important to have a wonderful quality of life while using your business as the vehicle to keep you there. I find most people have a very hard time maintaining that balance.
One entrepreneur I know pushes herself like crazy, working very long days, she’s working so hard. She’s overweight, gets sick a lot, can’t quit smoking and has trouble sleeping through the night. She even broke up with her boyfriend so she could just focus on work.
Another, entrerpreneur I know, is so worried about doing everything “perfectly” that she can barely get her ezine out one time a month. She fusses over what she’s written and spends days trying to write one article. She gets distracted easily and always finds other things she needs to do. Her desk is cluttered and she doesn’t enjoy working there.
Truthfully, there’s no clock or calendar that says when you have to get things done when you have your own business. It’s your clock. It’s your calendar. If you don’t enjoy your journey, what’s the point of it ?
Back to balance. Do you have it in your business and life? Take this brief quiz:
1)Are you averaging 7-8 hours of sleep a night? (or do you barely sleep through the night?
2)Have you done something fun or nice for yourself this week? (or do you always put yourself last?)
3)Do you look forward to each day when you get up in the morning? (or do you dread all that is waiting for you?)
4)At the end of the day, do you feel good about what you accomplished? (or are you “mad” at yourself for not doing more?)
5)Do you spend time away from your computer and your emails each day? (or do you feel that it’s impossible to put your smart phone down?)
If you didn’t answered “yes” to all 5 of those questions, I recommend you start putting some action into place to change that. You want to be a really wonderful “boss” to yourself!
