When I was in the corporate world, success was all about closing the next big deal. No sooner would I close one multi-million-dollar contract, than company owners were asking what I would do “next.” There was barely time to savor my successes. Those negative memories stuck with me.
In the corporate world, success seemed about doing bigger – and better – constantly.
This brought on the bonuses, salary increases, and new assignments. And, often, a bigger office.
As an entrepreneur, however, success seemed based on milestones.
For example, “hitting” 6-figures, a best-selling book, main-stage speaking, a support team, selling high-end coaching, and continuing to add more accolades to my portfolio. I did all of these things – and I did them “successfully.”
But after my Dad passed away, I realized that I was building my business around someone else’s idea of success. These actions were what the “group” dictated, not what was important to me.
I didn’t start my business to follow someone else’s rules blindly. If that was the case, I might as well have a job with a boss. It’s common knowledge that someone becomes an entrepreneur to make their own rules. (Yup, there’s a bit of rebel in me. )
I remember very clearly when I hosted a lot of luminaries on my past radio show. This included: Jack Canfield, Neale Donald Walsch, Marci Shimoff, Bruce Lipton, Ali Brown, David Neagle, Elizabeth Lesser, Donna Eden, Carol Look, Brad Yates, Nick & Jess Ortner, and so many other wonderful and respected experts.
I also hosted someone a bit less known (although equally an expert) who shared a fascinating story with me that has stuck with me all of these years. Several weekends before our conversation, she had held a retreat in her home for 12 women. Her friend, a “7-figure” coach, had hosted a big gala multi-day event in Las Vegas that same weekend for hundreds of attendees. When the two friends compared notes afterward, they earned the SAME profit and were equally successful. However, one person was much more stressed out. I bet you can guess which one.
This valuable lesson reminded me that there are so many ways to reach your end goal.
You don’t have to do the same as everyone. In fact, for your well-being, you must work in your area of brilliance and follow what sparks your energy.
Here’s the deal. You get to define what success is and what it means to you. Whether you’re in the corporate world or an entrepreneur, you choose. I promise you that when you work in your brilliance, everything is easier and more fun. Plus, you reach your own “personal” milestones a lot faster.
Uncovering your brilliance is often easier said than done.
Most of us have stopped listening to ourselves and instead pay more attention to what others are saying. Moving forward requires the clarity of knowing what you want, strategies to make it happen, and the confidence to believe you can do it.
