Mr. Bates is out of jail.  Thank goodness!  I’ve been waiting all season for this.   There were several interesting themes running throughout this week’s episode on Downton Abbey that are so relevant to us as entrepreneurs.

There’s a lot of change going on in Downton Abbey and Matthew has his work cut out for him.   When Matthew said to Mary “Believe in me” I think every entrepreneur instinctively knew what he was asking for.  It’s so important as entrepreneurs that we know that the people close to us believe in us.  What we do involves risk, a lot of responsibility and it’s scary at times.  To know that we’re emotionally supported helps keep our confidence level up and pushes us moving forward. Mary’s response later in the show to Matthew  was “You can always count on me”.  Those are the  5 magical words we want to hear.  (Although, we need to learn to count on ourselves first – but, that’s a subject for another article).

If you don’t have that person in your life, a coach/mentor or accountability buddy can help provide that same support.

The other message that came out really strong as Downton Abbey was struggling with change was how to leverage each person’s strengths.    As Thomas said to Lord Grantham “If we each do what we’re best at, Downton has a chance”.   He was referring to his expertise with the land, Matthew’s with business and Lord Grantham with the people of the village.   Lord Grantham had tried to do it all himself previously, but as the story had played out, he had almost lost his beloved Downton Abbey.  It was time for him to get some help!

One solopreneur I recently worked with used to spend hours upon hours writing  and publishing her weekly ezine.   What she dreaded most was putting her content in the ezine and making it look “pretty“.  She said it could easily take her 4 hours to do that part of it.   Like many solopreneurs, she held on to all of the parts and pieces of her business very tightly…refusing to delegate and let go.    Through our work together, she was able to make the necessary changes.  Strategic changes as to what work she would continue to do herself and what she would delegate going forward.  Mindset changes to release her belief that the person she hired wouldn’t do as good a job as she could.   Once these changes quickly happened, she found a virtual assistant (VA) who could make her ezine look “very pretty” in 20 minutes.   Now, she had over an additional 3.5 hours a week to be more creative and do things that brought more revenue into her business.  Also, because she no longer had the feeling of “dread” around her ezine, her content articles flowed more easily from her.

Here’s are Success Tips for you to help you get more optimal results in your business:

1)   Make a list of all of the different things that need to be done in your business.   For example:  website, ezines, working with clients, cold calling, networking, bookkeeping, social media….

2)   Which of these items do you most enjoy doing?  Which do you tolerate doing?  Which do you really dislike doing?

3)   Find resources to help you do the things that you really dislike.  Then as your business grows, hire resources to help you with the things that you “tolerate”.   This can mean that you either hire resources to teach you…or hire resources that you can delegate these things to.

4)   Your ultimate goal is to only do the things in your business that you truly enjoy.   That is where you are most creative.  That is also where you can also make the most money.   The smartest and most successful entrepreneurs always surround themselves with people of expertise in the areas that they are lacking.

Be Brilliant,
