I’ve been trying to figure out why the passing of John McCain has so saddened me. I’m not overly political, yet, his recent death has made me feel his loss.
This topic is not a political email and sticks with me as I am getting to a compelling point.

Honestly, I didn’t agree with most of Senator McCain’s politics, yet I feel a big, gaping hole with his loss. When I took some time to think about it, I realized it was because I had a lot of respect for him and how he showed up recently.
He owned his opinion.
He tried to do what he thought was the right thing.
He put country before political parties.
He overcame a challenging situation and let that empower him.
Taking this a step further, I started to think about who else I respected in my life and why that was so.
Some of the characteristics for others earning my respect were:
- Consistency
- Integrity
- Doing what they think is the right thing
- Having a sense and understanding of what the bigger picture is
- Owning their opinion, even though it might not always be popular, but because they believed it was right
- Leading from these qualities
Two important questions for you:
Who in your life do you respect?
Why do you respect them?
Now, let’s take this one more step further.
If you’re ready for it, you have the potential to step into leadership. A great leader needs to be respected.
What qualities do you want to own to become that leader that is respected?
Think about it.
Blessings and love to Senator McCain’s family and Aretha Franklin’s family.
