I’m just back from a very unplanned and spontaneous vacation where I was mostly unplugged while I was away. I’ll be really honest – I typically do travel with my laptop.
A very good friend of mine, Donna, invited me to visit her. She lives in a wonderful area with a beautiful beach within walking distance. Donna and I are both solopreneur coaches and met at an event several years ago. (It’s interesting how you attend events to learn very important information to grow your business, but you leave with so much more. Everyone I know has always made good friends/contacts at workshops and events). Even though, we both have coaches we work with, we still run ideas by each other, share resources, and travel to workshops together. Donna “told” me to leave my laptop at home and I did.
I’ll confess…it wasn’t that easy to leave the laptop at home I had that mindset that “what if something happened….”. I released my fears of leaving the laptop at home by tapping (see Tip #2 for more details). In the end, I was able to travel lightly and am so happy I did that. I had the best time! Check out the photo and you’ll see how beautiful the beach was – if I had been on my laptop, I would have missed it!
Yes, Donna and I talked about our businesses and did a lot of strategizing, but it’s a very different feeling when you’re talking while you’re on the beach then when you’re in front of the computer. I’m a “Type A”, always on the “go” and taking action to grow my business quickly, but even I have to break away from being in front of the computer. I teach my clients about the importance of balance …and how having more balance actually makes you more creative and more productive. It was time for me to listen to my own message AGAIN. I’ve unplugged in the past, but never for this long a period. I’m so proud I did this, I enjoyed it immensely and can’t wait to do more of it again soon!
Here are 4 Success Tips to help you “unplug” during the summer (or anytime) :
- Have a great support team you can rely on while you’re away to cover your business while you’re away
- Release any mindset issues that you have, such as: “something might happen” or ”I always need to be available”…..or other fears that pop-up. The technique I use which I am an expert in, is EFT Tapping. It’s the fastest way to shift your thoughts by getting rid of the negative ones (that inner voice) and replacing it with positive thoughts.
- Try slowly to unplug, if you’re not used to it. In other words, unplug for a few hours, then a few more hours and gradually increase the amount of time as you become more comfortable with the concept and feel “safe”.
- Have good friends who encourage you to “unplug”. Come to my event “Ultimate Success Solutions” workshop where you’ll meet lots of these type of future friends. Here’s the link to sign up (and check out the Early Bird Special) @ http://www.successcoachingwithKate.com/uss
(Seating is limited and Early Bird Special pricing won’t last!)
Please share below what you would do if you were able to “unplug” more often.
Be Brilliant,
It’s interesting, Kate, how so often the lessons we teach are those we need to learn ourselves!
I have just had 3 days “unplugged” and feel so much better for it – although I missed a teleclass I wished to listen in to, & admittedly I know there are people waiting for my next blog post & Ezine – all in good time!
And don’t forget “balance” is not a static situation – it is forever flexible, with shifting priorities. Deadlines may make work a higher priority for a while, then other thigns crop up to make our homelife more important for now.
EFT is a great addition to people’s toolkit for adjusting to change…
Sometimes, my daughter has to remind me to practice what I preach. I agree with you Kate, that it’s important to take time away from business to connect with our mind, body and spirit, as well as spending quality time with our family and friends.
Thanks for the reminder.
There are so many personal development tools available at our fingertips and EFT is one of those powerful tools for change.
Wishing you success with your event.
This year I’ve had much practice unplugging. Initially it was tough, but now I’m finding it much easier now. And life is so much more pleasant having found more of a balance in this way. I now try to stay off my laptop all weekend, with few exceptions, and have just been away for 5 days to Quebec and Vermont, and enjoyed the time away from my Iphone and laptop. I’ve even gotten back into my reading, and it helps to be more present to the people I’m with and my fabulous surroundings – just like that wonderful pic of the beach Kate! Your friend was wise to suggest not bringing your laptop! As coaches and healing professionals its so important for us to be walking our talk! But as we grow our businesses especially in the first few years, this is an important tightrope we walk! Thanks for sharing about this important aspect of being – being unplugged.
