If you’ve ever lost a parent or close family member, you probably had to deal with their stuff…their lifelong (valuable) possessions.

My decluttering journey started during the grieving process of my Dad. I started with Marie Kondo and her philosophy of only keeping what I “loved.” I donated, discarded, gave away, or sold 65 “hefty” size garbage bags. Then, it was on to the teachings of Joshua Becker where I learned to declutter to the next level (and had the honor of meeting him when he spoke in Boston). Now, I’m following and learning from more experts.

Over the last five years, I’ve followed other experts to continue peeling back the onion’s layers with decluttering. As much as I’ve removed, I sometimes sarcastically feel that my stuff is secretly multiplying at night 🙂

As my passion and enthusiasm have grown for decluttering and the vast transformations that have occurred for me, personally, I’ve included this in much of my teaching and coaching.

People often ask me to share my transformations, so I’m sharing a few with you.

Financial: I spend less. Plain and simple. Gone are the days of emotionally shopping because I could, was bored, or was feeling some negative emotion that I thought buying something would make me feel better. I don’t need things to make me happier as I’ve learned how to move into that emotion on my own. Decluttering has made me more efficient when buying something and there’s less waste. Of course, there’s definitely less impulse shopping.

Focus: I know what is important to me and I’ve decluttered the things, events, and people that no longer matter. I say “no” to opportunities that no longer interest me. I stay away from people who bring my energy down. I get rid of the stuff that is a distraction. The word “should” has left my vocabulary.

Guilt: What’s done is done. There’s no more wasting time feeling bad because I’ve spent time, energy, and money on a particular thing. No more guilt that it wouldn’t feel right to let it go. I’ve learned to forgive myself, bless that “item,” let it go, and move on.

The “Dreamer” Self: There’s always that vision of whom I think I could be. In my case, my Mom was a gourmet cook and I had a dream that I could try to be the same. I bought lots of gadgets and appliances to help me achieve that goal. Most of these things became dust collectors because I am not really into cooking. I finally sold or gave away all of this stuff. The pressure is off of me and I’m feeling lighter.

The above are only a few areas in my life that have transformed due to incorporating decluttering into my life. I could discuss, write, teach, or coach about this subject for hours.

My reward: I’m more focused, happier, creative, productive, energized, confident, successful, and abundant in every area of my life.

So, my challenge to you is to create awareness of how “clutter” is silently (or not so silently) impacting your life and success:

  1. Are you spending money smartly or emotionally?
  2. Can you focus and be productive or do you find yourself distracted during the day?
  3. Do you feel guilty (or shame) about items you may have bought that aren’t getting used or saying yes when you wanted to say no?
  4. Who does your dreamer self want to be? An athlete? A different size? To be involved in a specific hobby? Or???

Awareness is the first step. Making the best changes comes next.

I know how much decluttering has changed my life for the better. I would love for you to experience the same. There are many great resources online to learn the basics and strategy of decluttering. The transformational piece comes from the mindset shifts that happen on the journey and I’d love to help support you with that through private coaching.

When you’re ready for those big transformations, please let me know. My favorite methods for faster results are mindset techniques (tapping, neuroscience, and other resources I’m an expert in) and the appropriate strategies.
