Have you ever met someone who goes from job to job…or relationship to relationship. Never staying very long in one place.
Imagine an entrepreneur who has 4 jobs. Never making headway or committed to any one thing. What kind of life would that be?
Four jobs. Seriously?
Recently, I was attending a networking event and met an entrepreneur who was telling me about her business. Actually, she had 4 businesses. She was a reiki practitioner, cashier for a supermarket, sales person in a department store and last, but not least, an artist. She had been living this way for 10 years. Every time she talked about her four jobs, she laughed.
She had absolutely no interest in up-leveling her business. At least that’s what she said. She said she was perfectly happy the way things were. After all, she had been living this way for 10 years. She spent her days (and nights) running from one employer to the next.
Although, interestingly enough, she got excited when she mentioned that she’d get calls for people looking for reiki (what she was really passionate and excited about). Then she’s laugh. It stopped being funny and actually sounded sad. It really was one of those nervous laughs.
This is a perfect example of someone playing it small in her business (and their life). Her fears are so overpowering that she can’t commit to being single focused and really go after her dreams. The sad thing is that time flies by quickly. What is she waiting for? She’s going to be spending at least another 10 years living this way.
I met another woman at a networking event who was a very talented media specialist (others had told me so). I asked her who she was coaching with to help her grow her business and she said she was going to “do it alone”. Later, I found out that she also had several side businesses to help pay the bills. This had been going on for several years. She had never wanted to hire someone to teach her how to build a business that she loves. Instead of investing her business and herself, she would just find another job. Sometimes, it would be as part of a catering or event staff. But, it was always an hourly rate for doing the odd job. Her solution never unleveled her business – all it did was put a band-aid on it.
There’s nothing wrong with having a job (either full or part time) while you grow your business, but it should be a means to an end – not a way of life. You should always create an exit plan of when you want to be a fully self-employed entrepreneur. Otherwise, this scenario will go on for years.
Are you afraid to commit to fully to your business? Some people are able to fully engage and go forward. But, many people get scared.
If you play it small and don’t fully engage, all of the people that you are meant to help, aren’t getting that help from you. They most likely don’t even know you exist. If they met you, they probably wouldn’t take you as an expert as you don’t view yourself that way. If you don’t take yourself seriously, no one else will.
Today, if you’re not fully engaged in your business, ask yourself what can you do to change that?
What is the upside of fully committing to your business?
What is the downside of fully committing to your business?
