When tragedies strike, we try to find someone to blame.  And, in the absence of a suitable candidate, we usually blame ourselves” ~ Dowager Countess of Grantham

I thought that was the best line of the latest episode of Downton Abbey.   Interestingly enough,  there are several different ways “blaming others” or “blaming ourselves” affects our success.

There are many solopreneurs who look around and blame everyone and everything else for their failures.  Perhaps, it’s the “bad economy“…or  “too much competition“…”they’re too old” or “too young“.   In their stories, they’re always the “victim”.   They’re always talking about what someone or something did to them.   Our beliefs that we have about the outside world and others are known as “limiting beliefs”.  In our minds, they are as “true” as if they were reported in the newspaper.

On the flip side, many entrepreneurs tend to blame themselves.  The belief that they aren’t “smart enough”…”good enough” … “talented enough” …”deserving enough”  to have this success come to them.   Their inner critic is busy working overtime to call attention to all of their faults.   The beliefs we hold about our selves (whether they are true or not – but we believe them to be true) are called “core beliefs”.

Think about the areas in your business where you have seen failure.  How do you react when this happens?  What do you say to yourself?  Who or what do you blame?

What I honestly believe, is that while it’s important to be aware of your outside surrounding and what is going on in the world, the most impactful thing you can do is to take personal responsibility.    By this, I mean, be aware of your part in the process.  What did you do to contribute to this problem?  What are the patterns that you are repeating over and over again?

Awareness is the first step.  The second step is to start making the necessary changes.  As that very famous quote from Einstein goes  “Insanity:  doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.  To get a different outcome, you must change what you’re doing.  If you don’t change, you will keep failing in those areas.  Is that what you really want?

For some of you this will be an easy fix.  You will see what you need to change , make a minor tweak here or there and will get the outcome you desire.  But, for most of entrepreneurs, you really need more guidance.  That’s been my experience.  My changes always happened faster and better with the help of my coaches.   As that expression goes, “you can’t see the tip of your own nose”.

I will share with you that once you make these changes, your journey will take an amazing shift.  It always happens.  It’s happened to me time and time again and to all of those I’ve worked with.  Typically, our experience has always been the belief that  “that’s how things are”.  It is truly freeing to have a new, happier journey where you can make better choices.
