Why are so many people talking about the Duck Dynasty television show? Why do so many people even care? There’s been so much buzz around this television show.
For those of you (like me) who have never watched the show, here’s the premise according to Wikipedia: Duck Dynasty is an American reality television series that portrays the lives of the Robertson family, who became wealthy from their family-operated business, Duck Commander.
If you’ve been following all of the media hype lately, everyone is talking about it. Even people who would never watch the tv show. The head of the family made some remarks; there was a debate about whether the remarks were inappropriate or if this was freedom of speech. The show was temporarily suspended and then brought back again.
There’s an expression that there’s no such thing as “bad press”.
Whether or not you agree with/ or like the television show, doesn’t matter. What is interesting is that this shows that by being unique, different and your own brand…you can create a business empire.
You can do this in your own business, too. But, most entrepreneurs are afraid. They want to look and sound just like everyone else. Big mistake. If you’re just like everyone else you become a commodity. There’s no reason why someone should hire you/buy your products over someone else’s. You’re just regurgitating someone (or many people’s) stuff and there’s nothing special about you. It becomes very easy for your prospective client to become a consumer and comparison shop. It’s just like going to several drug stores looking for the cheapest brand of bottled water.
When you show up in the world with whom you really are that is when people are attracted to you. Of course, there will always be “naysayers” who don’t like you, but those people will always find someone not to like. You will however notice that you start getting a following of people who really like what you do. They’ll use the expression when talking about you that they “love you and your work”. They’ll follow you everywhere. They’ll buy your programs and products.
Today, what is one small thing you can do that really shows who you are? Something that really differentiates you from the rest of the world. It doesn’t have to be anything super large to start, but one small thing.
Maybe you start with a post on social media?
Maybe you start with a blog post or ezine article?
Maybe you start with a conversation with someone?
What is one small thing you can do today to separate and differentiate yourself from the rest of the crowd? Or, you can continue to play it safe and look and act just like everyone else. Quack…quack…

I love what you said about being different. So true! I am a Duck Dynasty fan and this family built a multimillion dollar business by being unique and also by being true to who they are. They didn’t change once they were successful they were still true to themselves and their family. I think that is something to be proud of.
We have to remember we can’t please everyone. There will be people who agree and those who disagree. If this isn’t the case then I think to much time is spent being wishy washy. And that isn’t a way to run a business.
exactly, Shawn. What’s hard is for most of us (especially women) we were brought up to be “pleasers”…let us know how you do or if you need help 🙂
This is such good advice, especially since I just started in the consulting arena and it seems like there are SO MANY other people already doing the exact same thing that I want to do. I want to learn from those who have found success, but I need to make it authentic and aligned with who I am.
absolutely, Wendy. That is exactly what I teach..”success on your own terms”…it’s my mission 🙂 Let us know how you do or if you need help
Loved this post!! That leads me to ponder today about what is the one thing that I can do to be me and show the world that this is my brand. Good ??
NIcky, it starts with one small thing 🙂
