Pretty shocking figures, huh? But, look around you…most of the solopreneurs you see in person or on-line won’t be around in the next few years. Or, perhaps, they will be around, but with a new business as their current one has failed. Very scary statistics as it could be you! (And, your failure has nothing to do with how “good” you are at your business).
Based on my experience with my clients, these are the TOP Reasons businesses get stuck or fail:
- Procrastination. When you get stuck and can’t or won’t take the action you need to take, your business won’t move forward and very easily can move backwards. Everyone procrastinates…and the problem is when you’re procrastinating on the really important stuff. Think about how many times you’ve said you were going to do something, but, hours, day, weeks, even months (or maybe years) have gone by and you still haven’t done it. You see your dreams moving further away from you and disappearing…and the Procrastination Monster inside of you has won again!
- Money: This issue is two-fold. The first is your experiences with money and what you believe about money. If you were brought up in scarcity (or the belief of scarcity) you may not be comfortable with money. Subconsciously, you might be holding the beliefs that “money is the root of all evil”…”rich people are evil”…and so on. This is a problem, because if you don’t see money as something good, you’ll never consistently have a lot of it. (I’ve found through working with my clients, that most people aren’t even aware of how deeply these beliefs are currently affecting them!)
The second way this affects you is not being able to charge what you’re worth. Perhaps, you’re uncomfortable talking about money or raising your rates. Maybe your voice changes …you talk faster or quieter …or you change the subject when the “money part” comes up. As a result, you’re not earning the money you really want….and you are probably feeling frustrated, resentful, tired, stressed out, jealous and all sorts of other negative emotions. This lack of income is stopping you from growing your business in the way you want to (after all, you can’t afford the resources you want), you’re not able to travel as much as you like, you’re savings are dwindling…not a pretty picture.
- Work-Life Balance: One of the primary reasons people start their own businesses is for the freedom that it allows. I often see in newer entrepreneurs, a fear that they will have to work too hard, lose time for fun and creativity and as a result, they don’t get into action and move their business forward. The more experienced entrepreneurs get stuck in this area, because they are working so hard, putting in lots of hours and over-delivering, that they become resentful that they just don’t have time for themselves and their family and friends. They’re afraid to grow their businesses more because they feel they just don’t have any more time to give up. They’re tired and stressed out. They’re not happy.
4. The last big block that I see solopreneurs have, and this is truly a “biggie” is the lack of self-confidence in what they are doing and want to do. When you don’t believe you deserve success or are worthy of success, this will stop you every time. It always does!
It’s very important that you get your expertise out in a much bigger way. That’s why you started your business. I don’t want you to be one of the 50% or 95% who fails.
