How can you not feel sad for Anna and Mr. Bates?  There’s nothing sadder than being apart from someone you love.  Thank goodness there was a connection at the end – I’m a romantic and love a happy ending.

It was an interesting episode this past Sunday.  Quite a few lessons for us to take forward into our own business.   I saw a common theme of “helping hands”…one person helping another throughout the show.

It started with Matthew who helped Lord Grantham by giving them his inheritance so they could keep their beloved Downton Abbey home.

Even though, Mrs. Hughes told Mrs. Crawley that Ethel (the destitute single mother/prostitute) had “taken the road to ruin, there’s no looking back”,  (got to love the drama!) the theme continued on with Mrs. Crawley helping Ethel and her little boy.

Mr. Mosely helped the new footman with table settings.   When a jealous Thomas asked Mr. Mosely why he had never helped him, the response was “He asked for help, you never did”).

Lord Grantham initial reaction about helping Sybil’s husband was “I don’t have to do anything.”   However, after sleeping on it and much pressure from his family, he succumbed to finally help his son-in-law.

This “helping hands” theme continued throughout the entire episode, even including Mr. Bates getting help in prison from another inmate.

Interestingly enough, the type of help that most caught my eye,  was at the end of the show from one of the patrons, “Donald & Darlene Shiley”.  I’ve seen their name at the end of every episode and was piqued to “google” them and learn more.  It turns out they have donated $1 million dollars to Masterpiece Theatre to support production of the  Downton Abbey series.   Both Donald and Darlene have a “rags to riches” story.  He was  a co-inventor of a very famous heart-valve.   The couple has donated generously over the years (currently 50-75% of annual income).

Here are the three ways the “helping hands” theme applies to you as an entrepreneur:

1)  According to the Laws of Attraction, we should give what we want to receive.  I found it very curious, that after being given this huge gift to save his home, Lord Grantham, had not opened up his heart very much and could only give grudgingly.  As entrepreneurs, we need a “lift up” at times.   I do.  Everyone I know does.

2) We all need help at times and we all should try to give help at times.   You should be able to ask for help when you need it.  Hire the resources that you need to help you.   Don’t be like Thomas, Lord Grantham’s valet, who isolates himself away from everyone. – ask when you need help.  Find the people who can help you the best.

3) The late Donald Shiley was a self-made entrepreneur.  His wife’s gift of $1 million dollars to PBS was the largest they have ever received.

Please post below and share what type of “helping hands” would you like to give and receive?
