While out walking Cali, my wonderful Cairn Terrier, the other day in the snow, I ran into one of my neighbors who had retired recently upon turning 65 years old.  Naturally, I asked her how it was going.  Her response was “I highly recommend retirement”.

Expecting to hear that she was sleeping late each day,  getting her nails done, and going out to lunch, I asked her how she was filling her days.  She surprised me by saying that she had opened up an Antiques Store, which had been her dream for the past 20 years.

How lucky we are as entrepreneurs that we don’t have to wait for retirement to live our dreams.  After all, that’s the reason we started our businesses.  Right?  That’s why I started mine.

Unfortunately, I’ve met a lot of entrepreneurs who’s “dream” businesses are turning into disasters
.   Here’s a  typical example :  Susan has a 5 year old business, she’s making over 6-figures a year but she has no life.  She can’t find support staff to help her because they don’t meet her “standards”.  Susan works nights and weekends and regrets the time away from her family.  Her clients feel free to contact her anytime anywhere and they do and she responds.   She’s always looking over her shoulder to see what other entrepreneurs do, trying to keep up with them.   Susan doesn’t know how to get off the gerbil wheel she’s on.

Another entrepreneur, Tina, has a  2-year old business that naturally evolved because of something she became very passionate about.  She loves what she’s doing and has been told she has a real “gift” for it.  The problem is Tina’s not making any money.  She doesn’t know how to get clients (she’s afraid she’ll sound too “salesy”).  The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) considers what Tina’s doing a “hobby” and not a business because she’s not earning income.  Her husband feels the same way and is putting a lot of pressure on Tina to quit her business and get a “job“.  He’s tired of “funding” her business.

If either Susan or Tina’s story resonates with you, here are a few suggestions to start bringing  the “dream” back to your business.  These are some of the questions I’ve asked my clients who are like Susan and Tina to help them start making changes towards getting better results:

1) Spend some time thinking about why you started your business.  What did you want to happen as a result?   Answer the question of what your “purpose” is.   Who do you want to work with?  Who are your ideal clients?  The clarity from those answers will help you get a clearer vision of what you wanted your business to look like.

2) Take those answers and compare them to where you are now.  What type of clients are you actually working with?  What types of programs/products are you offering?   What type of hours are you working?  Are you available around the clock or do you take time for yourself and your family and friends?  Make a list of what has to change.  Make a list of what is missing from where you are today.

3) Get into action.  Find the resources that will help you reach your dreams in an authentic way.   Learn to attract your ideal clients and create the programs/products that you are proud of.  Develop the work schedule you want to work.   After all, you don’t want to wait until you retire?  Or do you?
