What do you do when the people around you don’t support you?  

That’s a question that pops up a lot from attendees of my events.  They’re excited during the day, feeling energized, and then their energy drops as they worry about what happens when they return to “real life,” and the people in their world aren’t supportive.

I’d love to be able to tell you to remove those people from your life. However, I realize that often they’re spouses or immediate family members, so that’s a bit difficult to do and may not be something you want to do. 

Sometimes these people are negative in how they speak.  More often than naught, they may“encourage” you to stay where you are and not support your growth. That’s because they’re operating from their story of what can/can’t be done or how they view you and what they believe you’re capable of doing.

Perhaps, you’ve heard stories of one family member sabotaging another’s attempts at a diet by suggesting they go out for ice cream.  It can show up in many ways.

Here’s the deal.  You can’t change anyone else.  You can only change yourself.  What that means is no matter how much you want to change or you do change, you can’t force another person to go through the same transformation.  They have to want it, and you can’t drag them along.  

On the flipside, you shouldn’t stop your journey based on what others are doing or saying to you.  Don’t wait for their approval to move ahead.  

There is also a difference between people who are your cheerleaders (yay you!) and people who support your transformational growth.  They both have a time and place. 

Here are 6 strategies to protect your energy, enthusiasm, confidence and focus when needed.   

  1. Share your innermost desires only with people that you trust to support you and not pop a hole in your dreams and aspirations.
  2. Try tapping beforehand with this script going around from inner eye to top of head:

    1st round:  Any fear others won’t support my dreams
    2nd round:  I choose to release that fear
    3rd round:  Alternate between the two rounds above on the points

    4th round: I choose to know I can support my own dreams

  3. Donna Eden’s Zip Up is a great way to protect your energy before walking into a situation with negativity.   
  4. Especially during this time, it’s important to take time for self-care and whatever that means to you (working out, meditation, reading, yoga, walking, massage, etc.).  If you’d like, have your own bank account where you can invest in yourself when you choose to and not be dependent on someone else to give you “permission.”  Have time on your schedule that is your time to use as you see fit.  
  5. Ask that person (people) for the support you need and desire.  
  6. Set an intention to seek out support of a coach and community to support you when needed.  

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and some people may be great in specific areas and not great as supportive, transformational partners.  That’s ok.  That doesn’t make them bad people.  Just be aware of it and find supportive, transformational partners elsewhere to help you in these areas.
