We’re getting close to the end of the year. Are you happy with how 2013 went for you? Or are you wishing and hoping for better next time around?
I’ll tell you a secret. Next year is going to happen no matter what you do. It’s really up to you if you’re going to plan correctly for next year or not.
You can work really hard in 2014. Maybe you’ll be ecstatic next December…or maybe depressed. Your choice.
Here’s the deal:
*Working hard doesn’t mean you’ll get the results.
*Working a lot of hours doesn’t mean you’ll get the results.
*Taking just any action doesn’t mean you’ll get the results.
*Copying successful people doesn’t mean you’ll get the results.
*Doing it yourself definitely doesn’t mean you’ll get the results.
My point is that not all action will get you what you want. You can work 40+ hours a week, spend a lot of time and energy and still not walk away satisfied with the results. It takes the same amount of time and energy to get good results as to get bad results.
I’ve met so many entrepreneurs who are (practically) in tears because they’ve been working so hard, with no time for fun and still aren’t where they want to be.
Are you willing to risk 2014 on trial and error? Here’s one of the most important things you can do for your business and yourself.
Create a vision statement of what you want next year to look like.
Yup, you may have heard that before, but, before you blow that suggestion off, did you know that the majority (95%) of all entrepreneurs don’t write a vision statement…and did you know, that the majority of entrepreneurs (95%) make less than $100,000 a year? Do you see the correlation now and why it is vital that you write your vision statement?
Here are a few suggestions to get a vision statement that will work for you: (There are actually quite a few steps but I want to get you going with some of the initial ones).
1) Phrase your statement in present tense (I am vs I will)
2) Be specific (I am making a lot of money vs I am making $8,000 a month)
3) Use the words “at least” or “more than”. Otherwise, that’s all you’ll get. Example: I am making at least $8,000 each and every month vs I am making $5,000 every month
4) Include the emotions you will feel once your achieve your goal (happy, excited, proud…)
5) Post it so you can see it
If you have written a vision statement before, ask yourself this:
- When is the last time you updated it?
- When is the last time you looked at it?
- Does it still reflect what you want?
- If it didn’t work for you, were you taking the right action to go along with it? (This is key. Most people think it’s enough to just write one. Nope, you got to get out and do the work!)
Don’t be deceived. This is just the first step to having a break thru 2014.
