babyThere’s an old expression….”elephants never forget” and people often have this same characteristic.  Never forgetting anything!

Elephants at birth weight about 200 pounds.  When baby elephants are trained, there’s a rope tied to them.  They learn early on that no matter how hard they pull, that rope will not budge or break loose.

Their trainer repeats this experience over and over again with them.  Elephants develop a belief that then can never set themselves free from this rope.

Fast forward to when the elephant is now an adult.  They weight on average 12,000 pounds – that’s 60 times what they weighed when they were born.    Yet, they can be tied up using the same rope, and they won’t even try to break free.  They remember that they never could so their belief is that they can’t.

Are you doing the same in your life?  Are you stopping yourself short because of old fears and beliefs?

Are you an elephant?   Here’s a mini quiz to see if you are:  quiz

1)   You have tried things in the past that haven’t worked out so you won’t try them again  (example:  you forgot your lines in a school play when you were a child and don’t want to speak in public now)

2)   You heard that something is bad and now you don’t want it (example:  you heard that rich people are evil and you would never want to be evil)

3)   You were told you something as a child and you now show up in the world that way (example:  you were told you were stupid, clumsy, ugly, fat, skinny, a loser, your brother was the smart one)

4)   You were taught about expectations as a child and what you were taught is what you have experienced (example:  “people like us never make a lot of money”….”if you want something done right, do it yourself” )

5)   As a child, you were brought up to be a “good girl” or ”good boy” and are still acting that way (example:  you’re still worried about the type of impression you make on others/always want everything to be perfect)

If you answered “yes” to at least one of these questions, there are old beliefs that are blocking your success.  You are an elephant.

The good news is that this is very common.  All of us have beliefs that shape who we believe we are and how we show up in the world.  Even better news is that you can change and replace those old beliefs.
