Have you watched The Voice? Honestly, I don’t really watch reality television but I just love this show. The talent is so amazing. The initial premise of the show is that there are 4 judges (all are top performers in their own right) and the contestants are singers trying to get chosen by at least one of the 4 judges. The judges seats are turned around facing the audience when the contestants sing and are judged solely on their voice. The judges can’t tell if they are old or young, skinny or fat, attractive or not, male or female, race, ethnicity or how they’re dressed (some come on the show very stylish, while others have bodies covered with piercings and tattoos). They are chosen solely based on their voice…nothing else.
The interesting feedback given by the judges I heard over and over again when someone wasn’t picked was that the song they choice or the style that they were singing in wasn’t the best one for them. In otherwords, the contestants were not performing their in own unique style, talent and specialness. Some were trying to sound like Adele, others like Michael Buble, and so on. The judges said there was already an Adele and Michael Buble and would invite the contestants to come back, sing in their own style and try again.
I see entrepreneurs doing the same thing when marketing their business. They copy and imitate what others are doing – even though it doesn’t really show them off in the best light. What works well for one person, doesn’t necessarily flatter the next. Everyone has their own style and own unique way of getting their expertise out. The trick and challenge is to find out what yours is and use it.
I know I had this problem when I first started my business a few years ago. I saw what the top coaches were doing and I tried to emulate it. The problem was it didn’t feel natural to me. Their words, their phrases weren’t my words or phrases. Once I had the courage to use my own words..once I really got in touch with who I was ….the clients flowed to me like a faucet running on full force. These were my ideal clients and they couldn’t wait to invest to work with me . They appreciated everything I did, sent me referrals and wanted my help NOW. These were the people I loved to work with.
Get in touch with what makes you special and different than everyone else. Ask your clients if you don’t know the answer. This is how you want to market your business to attract your ideal clients. Everything is so much easier this way. Honestly.

Great advice. I agree that we should not imitate or copy business styles or strategies from others and see what works best for us.
