Have you heard this song by The Happenings? It was a hit way before my time, but the radio stations still play it every year in May and June.
I’ll be alone each and every night
While you’re away, don’t forget to write
Bye-bye, so long, farewell
See you in September
See you when the summer’s through
Click here if you already know the words to the song and ready to get into action and beat the summertime business blues… (and check out my latest video with a tip for you!)

For so many solopreneurs, this becomes their theme song. They develop and accept the mindset that summer business will be slow and they stop taking action. Often, solopreneurs “wrongly” assume that everything will pick up again in September. The problem is that your business can’t go from a speed of 4 or 5 (or even worse, 2 or 3) and then automatically to 10 in September. You’re just too far away and your speed is too slow.
See you in September
See you when the summer’s through
Here we are
Saying goodbye at the station
Summer vacation
Is taking you away
Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Then what happens is you become scared, frustrated or even desperate because the business you were counting on to happen at the end of the summer, isn’t showing up.
Can you really afford to not make money over the summer? Can you really afford to go 3 or 4 months without that steady income? If you can, you’re in the minority. But most solopreneurs, have to have that income coming in at all times.
Also, your clients (that you were counting on) may find someone new (as this song says “ … Or lose you to a summer love”) to do business with. Where does that leave you? Probably more frustrated and scared than before.
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love (counting the days ’til I’ll be with you) (counting the hours and the minutes, too)
Here are my Success Tips for you:
- Realistically look at how much money you want and need to make this summer. Set a goal by looking at what you earned in previous years and increase it – 10% is a good amount to use.
- Realistically, look at how many hours you are willing to work this summer. If you have children who will be out of school in the summer, your work hours may change or be limited in the summer. You want to make sure you set yourself up to succeed
- Check out my brand-new program which was created to help you have consistent income throughout the entire summer. I’m going to teach you what action steps to take to make money throughout the entire summer. Here’s the link to learn more: http://www.successcoachingwithKate.com/quickcash
Please post your summer business plans below:
(Don’t be surprised if you’re humming this song the rest of the day….)
Summer biz plan: 1. Have my talented colleague teach my summer book writing course (creating income, time and also supporting those people who want to write their books this summer)–this means I need to take action ASAP; 2. Do some editing and book coaching with continuing clients) 3. Take your course, Kate. I’m signed up.
I didn’t know solopreneurs expected their business to slow down during the summertime. I thought only seasonal businesses closed shop when their season had passed. In my eyes, solopreneurs have businesses that are for all seasons. I do agree with you Kate that they need to shift their thinking. You know as well as I do that our thoughts create our reality.
I wish you well with your course helping solopreneurs with their cash infusion for the summer and beyond.
Adalia, this a big problem for lots of solopreneurs as their income dries up over the summer. Thanks for your well wishes for my upcoming course. I want to help as many as possible have consistent income throughout the year!
Excellent points Kate!
I’m guilty of automatically assuming the summer will be slow. But since I only just launched my company, I have absolutely NOTHING to base that assumption on other than what everyone else says. While it may be true for some businesses, it’s NOT true for other businesses. (It depends on what type of business you have and who your target audience is!) And even if it is true for your business, sometimes, we’re guilty of creating that reality because we assume it IS that way and there’s nothing we can do about it!
Time to adjust my mindset…
My biz plan is fairly simple and very lucrative:
1. Get 6 trainings in the can which means the video is done for our business members.
2. Get my talk scripted and converted to my natural delivery with powerpoint.
3. Get the marketing and sales plan done for our group facilitation licensing courses to launch November.
This is a huge schedule but my team is up for it. The key is having a savings plan that allows you to hire during the summer the resources you need.
