I’ve never really planted before except for one time in 6th grade where I planted potatoes. I don’t remember what happened to those potatoes, but I am guessing it wasn’t anything of great significance. But through a series of conversations this past week, one thing led to another. I spent 3 days of multiple trips to the garden shops and decisions of which plants, soil and planters to choose. Then lots of work: planting, digging, and watering over 20 plants with TLC (tender loving care). It was more fun than I could have ever imagined (but, that’s a story for another blog post).
I tell my private clients that their journey is very similar to a seed being planted. For the seed to turn into a beautiful, strong flower, it needs the right soil, sunlight, water, food, oxygen and TLC. It’s the same for my clients as they go through their journey to building a more successful business and happier life. They need to take good care of themselves and create routines in both their business and personal life to grow.
Here’s a picture of one of my favorite plantings from this weekend – it’s a combination of beautiful red geraniums and begonias. I must admit, I check on those plants several times a day to see their progress.
Here are a few Success Tips to guide you:
- Find something that makes you feel good and bring it into your life as a daily routine. This could be meditation, gratitude journal, walking, exercise, hugging someone – whatever you enjoy.
- Each day, make sure you are planning and prioritizing your days events so the most important things get taken care of
- Continue to learn new things from your mentors. If you’ve stopped learning from them, find a new mentor. Constantly expanding your mind is a key to continuous growth.
I must admit, I check on those plants several times a day to see their progress. It makes me happy to do that. Every time I look at the plants, I am so delighted and can’t wait to share what I see. New buds are quickly showing and the air is becoming even more fragrant. I am already imagining what all of the flowers will look like in full bloom and being surrounded by the different shades of pinks, purples, blues, reds and whites.
As you continue on your journey, and if you take good care of yourself, you will notice how you start to change and your business and life grows into something beautiful, too – just like these plants.

Kate – Very timely post in relation to spring 🙂
As a business coach, I work with clients to apply systems and process that help grow their business and achieve a fulfilling life. This post is a great reminder of how all growth requires a system and process.
Your analogy of planting a seed is very appropriate. So true! Unfortunately, I’m guilty of planting the seed and then not watering or feeding it on a consistent basis. Ooops! 🙂 (Consistency is one of my weak areas.)
But your analogy makes an important point: business success is not an overnight thing. It takes time and effort. Small consistent effort over time though makes a BIG difference. And like a flower or a child, before you know it, they’ve grown up and we wonder where the time went! Like a lot of people looking for business success, I have a habit of wanting to find that one, big thing I can do to make a BIG difference in my business overnight — the magic pill if you will — and ignoring all of the small, little things that I can do to grow my business.
Now that you mention it, I have a seed I need to go feed and water… 🙂
I love this post, because I can SO relate to your analogy! I L-O-V-E working in my garden. I only discovered it because three years ago I wanted to plant pumpkins for Halloween for my kids. I went to the store to get pumpkin seeds and came home with over $100 in vegetable plants. lol
The thing about planting seeds (in business and in the real garden) is that sometimes it seems that your plants are dying or not growing, and then if you give it some time and attention, you can come back the next morning to find that they’ve grown several inches (or, so it seems, anyway).
I like your easy steps. It’s a good reminder to enjoy life and focus on the good things (like – being in the garden with my kids!).
Awesome post.
