This past week, I was honored in Hollywood (California) by the National Association of Best Selling Authors and IMG_3612received the coveted Quilly Award on the Red Carpet.  Yes, they actually said…”…and the winner is”.  Very cool!

The venue was the original hotel (and ballroom) where the Oscars had initially been held.  The Quillys were actually made by the company that makes the Oscars and Emmys.  The room was filled with best selling authors who were brought together from all four corners of the world.   I had the privilege of hearing Peter Diamandis and Mark Victor Hansen speak (if you aren’t familiar with them, I highly recommend you “google” them as they are well-worth learning about.   I heard about 3D printing, which is now used to create artificial limbs for those in need, robots and a dentist who was donating his time and money to educate teenagers on Trash Mountain in Honduras.  Truly an inspiring, invigorating, magical and thought-provoking few days.

The profits from my book helped donated $10,000 to fight illiteracy worldwide.

Here are some important tips for you when you’re on the Red Carpet:

1)  Dresses with sequins are heavy.  Dresses with sequins lose sequins.  The night before I flew, I was sewing a big rhinestone on my brand new dress as it had fallen off.  I hand-carried my dress on the plane and when I took it out of the garment bag, more sequins had fallen off.  Every time someone would touch me or hug me, more sequins would fall off.  All of this from a couture dress from Bloomingdales!  I guess that Red Carpet dresses are only meant to be worn once 🙂

2)  Carry toothbrush, toothpaste and floss in your purse at all times.  You never know when you’ll be interviewed.   IMG_3609The last thing you want to do is smile and have a piece of lettuce in your teeth when they’re taking a photo of you.

3) Make friends.  They’ll tell you when you have lipstick on your teeth, your tag is sticking out or your hair is out of place.  And, they’ll take endless photos of you in different settings and poses.

4) Have ID with you.  For the after party, I quickly changed into shorts and flip-flops which my feet were very happy about.  If I hadn’t been wearing my black armband ID that attendees had been given, security wouldn’t have let me back in.

5) Most importantly, have fun.  Believe.  Do.  Anything is possible.
