You have to promise me before you read any further, that you won’t say anything to my family.
My mother is a very private person. My sister is the same way. I get it, I’m the same way, too.
Recently, my mom was rushed to the hospital. To the critical cardiac care unit to be exact.
It was very serious. Actually, that’s an understatement.
10 days later, it was as if a miracle had happened. She seems so much better. Obviously, a lot of that is due to the fantastic medical care she received.
However, I strongly believe that most of her fast recovery is due to my sister who was a relentless advocate for my mother. My sister talked to everyone (actually, even more than everyone) who was involved with my mother’s case. Even when my sister wasn’t there, she knew everything that was going on. Sometimes, even faster than I did – even when I was right there in the hospital. She left nothing to chance and nothing fell through the cracks.
It got me thinking. It’s wonderful to have an advocate when you’re seriously ill and in the hospital.
But, what about being an advocate for yourself in your own daily life as you grow your business? After all, an advocate is kind of like a “superhero” – don’t you think?
Truthfully, I don’t think most entrepreneurs do the best job of this.
If you’re feeling a bit neglectful of yourself, here are 5 powerful actions steps you can take to start advocating for yourself for a breakout 2016.
- This is one of my favorites. Always, ask yourself when taking action: “Does this honor me?”. I learned this very early on when I started to learn about mindset. If it doesn’t, don’t do it.
- Ask yourself, “If my life depended on this, am I satisfied with what I’ve done?” Now, you’re probably thinking I’m being overly dramatic here- but we are our own business, don’t you agree?
- There’s an expression that “the devil is in the details”. Have you put together a detailed plan for any project you’re undertaking? Have you planned out the before, during and after of what action steps need to happen and who will do them? Have you put the critical dates on your calendar? These things need to happen to have a successful outcome.
- Are you taking good care of yourself? Are you getting 8 hours of sleep? Fun fact for you: at less than 6 hours of sleep your brain functions as if you’re drunk. Cut back on the sugar you’re eating. And, overall, eat healthier- more fruits and veggies. Not only will this give you more beautiful and younger looking skin (and who doesn’t want that?) but will also give you a much clearer and focused mind. As a result, you’ll be more productive in your working hours.
- Are you surrounding yourself with an “A Team”? You want to make sure you’ve got a great community supporting you. Whether this is family, friends, team members and coaches. None of us can do this alone. We all need others to help lift us up and guide us. Take a look around you at who is there. Who do you want to keep and who needs to be replaced?
Those 5 steps will get you far in 2016. Make them a foundation as you move forward and become your own “superhero”. I can’t wait to hear how you implement this and look forward to your comments on my blog.
