IMG_5429Recently, I got my haircut.  It was shorter than I usually go and a much different look.

When I got home, I wasn’t too happy.  I thought it was too short and my ears showed. And, to make matters worse, I had scheduled professional videos to be shot soon for my upcoming launch.  My hair grows fast – but not that fast.

I was upset.  All I could think was, how could she have cut my hair that short?

I did something different than I normally do.  Instead of letting that emotion buildup inside of me, I talked to some of the other stylists at the salon.  Here was their overall consensus.

“It fits you.”

“It’s an edgy look which matches you.”

“Your ears are perfect.”

“You look young and hip.”

I realized that I had an old story playing in my head about ears.  I remembered growing up hearing from someone in my family that it was best to cover their ears.  An important detail you need to know, is that this was a conversation I overheard.  It was not meant for me.  It was not about me.  I interpreted it differently.  I thought that I should cover my ears with my hair.

Who would have believed that I have hair mindset?

Then I talked to my stylist and told her what I was thinking.  We had the best conversation.  She explained to me that her job was to make me look great.  That she wanted to show off my best features in any haircut she gives me and that she didn’t see any problem with my ears.

That’s when it hit me.  She treats her clients the same as I treat my clients.

She wants me to look great.  I want my clients to show up in their “zone of genius”.  I maximize my clients’ best strengths and help them in the areas they are deficient in.

I ended up having a hair breakthrough.  When you work with experts, they will always want to make you shine.  Whether to look amazing (in her case) or show up in your brilliance (in my case).

Is there an area in your life that you’re not trusting an expert to guide you through because you’re replaying an old story?

The truth is that I didn’t even know I was doing this to myself until I talked to her.

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself as a “check-in”:

  1. Are you doing things the same way or do you have a quarterly check-in to see what is or isn’t working?

  1. Do you run your results by your mentor/team/coach to discuss what the next step is?

  1. Do you have a plan to try something new?

Now, one last thing I need to mention.  Regarding #3 above.  I thought I was open to trying something new.  After all, I do get my haircut every few months.  However, I realized that I was mostly doing variations of what I already had.  I needed an expert to give me a kick in the butt and get me out of my comfort zone.   My coach does that for me.
