As someone who has held more sales conversations and coached more people than I can count, I see a common pattern.  Maybe you’re doing it, too?    It might feel safe at first however, I would bet any amount of money that this is holding you back from having the success you want.

Some examples that people will tell me:

  • I have to ask my husband…
  • My wife and I have an agreement…
  • I have to take care of my kids, parents, goldfish…

On the surface, those phrases might sound like perfectly reasonable explanations of why someone can’t do something.  Maybe you’ve used one or two of them before?

The problem is at some point, you start hiding behind these excuses.

Let me share a quick story.  There was a woman, “Sue”, who wanted to coach with me and before she could commit to moving forward, she needed to ask her husband.  When we spoke a few days later, her husband had said “no” that she couldn’t hire a coach.  She told me that unfortunately, she couldn’t move forward.  The problem for “Sue” is that she was always able to hide behind her husband’s refusal to move forward- as well as, making him the “bad guy”.

Her husband was her excuse so she never had to put herself out there.  “Sue” could always blame it on her husband’s lack of support (and secretly take a deep breath and a sigh of relief).  Otherwise, she would have to step out of her comfort zone and try something new.  That step terrified her more than having a serious conversation with her husband about her dreams and desires.

I’m not saying that it isn’t a good thing to have a conversation with your spouse before spending, what I am referring to is using that other person as a reason to not move forward.

Where in your business and life are you hiding behind an “acceptable” excuse so you don’t have to move forward?

When you do this, you’ve given yourself a “less than” mentality instead of showing up in your brilliance.   Ultimately, you’ve given your power away.  It’s time to take your power back.

What are you going to do differently today?
